Workin' it out in Los Angeles

During the last trip I made to La La Land, I got to hang out with a couple of big time celebrity personal fitness trainers. Of course celebrity & Los Angeles are quite redundant in that everyone either knows someone or serves coffee at the Starbucks to someone. All these trainers have big personalities though and could easily be on the next spin-off of Jackie Warner's Work Out reality TV show. As you might want to look your best this Summer, whether heading to the hipster pool on the roof of the Standard Downtown L.A. or hanging out at the still exclusive but decidedly "Jersey Shore" crowd at Drais, you will want to do some sessions with these folks when in L.A.
Andrea Lawent is the owner of Made In LA. Located in the heart of Hollywood, she hosts a unique Rock n Roll workout on a stationary bike called The Ride. At this venue overlooking Hollywood Boulevard with its tourists, gold sidewalk stars, and out of luck cast-offs lying alongside, Andrea does one of her group sessions after work, surrounded by Mexican religious candles. Yelling into a mike and motivating the crowd, she becomes an evangelist for fitness. Although I didn't spot Angie Everhart or any of the gym's other A-listers, I could just imagine Californication's Hank Moody giving himself over to Andrea's rock n roll revival.
For a more one on one customized experience, I spent an afternoon at the UCLA track with personal fitness trainer Michael Carson. Michael has previously shot the workout video Stripping with Carmen Elektra. Instead of a Pussycat Doll, Michael brought Hollywood agent Richard Caleel, to the track. A great way to get out of the office or gym rut, Michael had his client throwing around a large medicine ball and grabbing hold of gymnastic rings. This personalized service was right on target and had Caleel panting and out of his usual workout comfort zone.
Later that week, while walking around Venice Beach, I bumped into bodybuilder Bishoy Hanna. I discovered him workin' it out at the Muscle Beach gym in full view of the tourists that stop and gawk, hoping to spot the next Arnold Schwarzenegger, who actually worked out there early in the Governator's career. Hanna also operates Bishoy's Natural Fitness Gym in West Hollywood where he offers personal training sessions, but your best way to find him would be at Muscle Beach. This amazing looking Egyptian born contest winning muscle head would surely put any 100 lb weakling through their paces.
